Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment

Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment

If you are told that your snoring is very severe, you find it hard to wake up in the mornings, you fall asleep during the daytime and you have pauses in breathing during your sleep – you may actually be suffering from the disorder Sleep Apnea.

The word Apnea is derived from the Greek meaning ‘want of breath’. Sleep apnea is more common in men than women and more than two-fold seen in middle age and elder adults.

Types of Sleep Apnea

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This type of Apnea is far more the most common type seen. The muscles in the throat relax thus sealing the passage that allows air to flow.
  • Central Sleep Apnea. This type of apnea is when the brain cannot send the right signal to the muscles that control breathing/respiration.

  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Severe snoring
  • During sleep periods of not breathing as observed by others
  • Waking up with breathing difficulties
  • Dry mouth and sore throat
  • Morning headaches

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea is a disorder that usually cannot be reversed by itself. There are many methods that can be used for treatment. A variety of devices may be used to open the airways. In some cases treatment with surgery will give better results.

What You Can Do

  • Loose weight if you are overweight. With Weight loss results show a significant reduction of apnea.
  • Try to avoid the use of alcohol, sedatives and sleeping pills. These substances cause relaxation of muscles in the throat thus affecting breathing.
  • Try sleeping on your side or prone (face down). The Supine position (lying on one’s back) pushes back the tongue and soft palate (velum) thus they sag, narrowing the airway passage. During sleep to prevent unconsciously moving into the supine position you can put a table tennis or tennis ball into the waistband area of your pajamas, this method has shown to be beneficial.
  • Treatment of nasal congestions should be treated. Allergies, deviation of the nasal bone (septum deviation) low muscle tension of the nose wings (vibrissa) is breathing obstacle/problem that inhibits breathing comfortably through the nose thus forcing the person to breath from their mouth. These are all disorders that will cause the Apnea to worsen.
