Thyroid / Goiter Surgery is the partial or total removal of the thyroid gland and thus the body is void of this organ.  It is part of totally removed if it is unhealthy and may be causing damage to the rest of the body and other organs.

The Thyroid gland has a left and a right lobe connected by a small bridge (very much like a butterfly shape) and is located below the Adam’s apple along the front of the windpipe.
If the diseased gland is on the right or left lobe it will be completely removed together with the bridge link.  No part of the diseased thyroid gland can be left behind.

Let there be no doubt about should a part of the gland be left in order to avoid taking replacement tablets – this is a very risky and total removal of the diseased lobe is a must.

To summarize goiter surgery any part that is diseased must be removed – either the lobe that is diseased or total removal if the disease has spread.
