There are two main risks of thyroid surgery:

  • The first risk is the risk of the nerves that are lead to the vocal cords may be damaged (facial stroke risk).
  • The second is the risk of damage to the parathyroid gland (which regulates calcium) as this is located right next to the thyroid gland.

In order to minimize these risks, during surgery we use very specific specialized techniques to prevent damage to other structures in the surgical intervention.

At the same time certain specific methods enable us to monitor and determine the functioning of the formation during and after surgery. The prevalence of these risk incidences worldwide is known to be around 1% temporary phases. The risk of temporary vocal cord paralysis is in the ratio of 1% to 3%, the patient may also notice their voice may have changed. In the ratio between 1% and 4% of the work of the parathyroid glands may be affected thus resulting in the fall by calcium in the body. This can be very dangerous as this may result in muscle convulsions that could also lead to critical heart contractions.

Permanent injury cases are in the ratio of around one in a thousand. These being, vocal cord injury, facial stroke risk and the decline in calcium balance. Doctors are obliged to give each patient prior to surgery the knowledge of these risks.
