One of the most frequently asked questions about Goiter Disease is “Who is most at risk?’ Goiter is the formation of a large swelling on the front lower part of the neck. Previously Eastern Anatolia and Eastern Black Sea were regions where the disease was more frequently seen. One of the reasons is that they are known to be prone to iodine deficiency. Though now the emphasis is put on the nodules rather than the goiter.

The small swellings on the inside and on top of the Thyroid Gland are called nodules. These nodules pose a much greater significant risk of swelling rather than the goiter. These nodules are frequently found in quite a high proportion of people. About nearly half of the patients over the age of 50 are found to have swelled nodules in comparison to younger patients where they are mostly non-existent. Nodules occurring in middle age, although seen in both sexes, the prevalence is higher in women than in men.

To summarize, swelled nodules are diagnosed at a greater number in women and are more frequently seen in people over 50 years old.
